Description
PETER’S FIELD
An account, in dossier form, of the events that led up to, and took place on, the 16th of August 1819 on Peter’s Field in Manchester later described as ‘The Peterloo Massacre’.
60,000 people gathered peacefully to lobby for Parliamentary Reform and the right to vote. Thus, by order of the local magistrates, the local armed mounted yeomanry ended the event by hacking into the crowd resulting in the death of at least 18 people from babies to the elderly and the maiming of hundreds of others.
The government’s response was to repress calls for further electoral reform. The Home Secretary ensured the arrest of many activists and the government passed the Six Acts which restricted freedom of speech and assembly, thereby limiting the rights of future demonstrators.
Thus perpetuated the power of proscription.
Peter’s Field contains a CD of the hour-long programme of song by Sean Cooney (The Young’Uns) with Eliza Carthy, Sam Carter all narrated by Middleton-born ballad singer Jennifer Reid (The Gallows – Pole TV Series).
Also included is an access code to download this CD as a file.
‘Peter’s Field is the most powerful creative evocation yet of ‘Peterloo.’ Sean Cooney and friends take a whole cast of characters from the original sources and bring them memorably to life. It’s great to see and hear radicals like Sam Bamford and Mary Fildes transformed into folk heroes, alongside ordinary workers and villainous magistrates, soldiers and spies’.
