Description
Taken from the illustrated foreword by Jimmy Cauty
The ancient practise of Roadside Magic is going through something of a revival today. This may be connected to the way so many modern engine bays are unfathomable; they have developed beyond the easy spotting of an alternator, a carburettor, a filter, an etcetera.
Today the mechanic is confronted by a series of black plastic boxes covered in strange symbols that require deciphering via The Internet. Those symbols were once explained within bound paper manuals, but even before that, in the 19th Century, the decipher came in the form of public notices, wall charts and broadsides. It is commonly accepted that symbols and ciphers that lead to roadside repairs were carved in wood or hand painted at crossroads and wayside inns.
All of these serve the same purpose. If the symbols are combined with ritual then the solution to problems can be gained. And what of these rituals? After having spent time researching the dances and spellcharms of old, Libby Bove turned her research to those very same deeds adapted for today, and how they have evolved to be applied to the inner workings of today’s impenetrable black plastic boxes.
Roadside Magic is number two in the ANTAR True Folk Tales series.
